Warning signs of diabetes

 

Familiarize yourself with the warning signs and symptoms of diabetes.

Sometimes the symptoms are very obvious, and sometimes they are not. Early detection and knowledge of the warning signs is your greatest weapon against the disease!

  1. TYPE I DIABETES MELLITUS: These symptoms occur suddenly and require immediate medical attention.

  2. Excessive thirst

  3. Frequent urination, sometimes exhibited by bedwetting (in large quantities)

  4. Sudden vision changes

  5. High amounts of sugar in the blood and/or urine (a sweet, fruity odor may be present in urine, on one’s breath/body )

  6. Extreme hunger (increased appetite)

  7. Rapid or unexplained weight loss

  8. Fatigue (weak and tired)

  9. Irritability and mood changes

  10. Drowsiness, lethargy

  11. Nausea and/or vomiting

  12. Abdominal pain

  13. Rapid, hard breathing (heavy, labored)

  14. Stupor, unconsciousness


  15. TYPE II DIABETES MELLITUS: These symptoms occur gradually; however, they are no less important than those associated with TYPE I, and must receive immediate medical attention.

  16. Blurred vision

  17. Tingling or numbness in the legs, feet or fingers

  18. Frequent infections of the skin

  19. Recurring skin, gum or urinary tract infections

  20. Itching of skin and/or genitals

  21. Drowsiness

  22. Slow healing of cuts and bruises

  23. Any of the symptoms listed under TYPE I Diabetes
